In honor of seeing a surprise DMX live performance at the BIG 3 this past weekend, here’s one of the all time great examples of late 90s, early 2000s rap music videos/songs. This is, circa 2001, Ruff Ryder Anthem by DMX and about a hundred other random shirtless thug-looking dudes.
This video has all the necessities: ‘crotch rockets’, wheelies, weight lifting, shirtless black guys, black guys in white tank tops, black guys in white undershirts, black guys in matching shirts, pointing into the camera, random hand motions, Tupac bandanas, chains, dancing on-top of beat down vehicles, and people yelling the same thing over and over again to a beat.
DMX’s not giving a single fuck about whatever court case he tells the reporter “…mind your business lady” is so perfect. Doing a little digging on Wikipedia, I don’t think guessing which arrest/case he’s referring to is going to get me anywhere. I mean, the dude’s been arrested 22 times in the past 19 years, which has gotta be some kind of rap industry record.
I don’t think anyone has any idea what this song is about but its catchy and does its job. Be a Ruff Ryder, enjoy your Tuesday fools.
